Breathless Season 2 Review: Another Mediocre Entry With a Ton of (Unnecessary) Drama

Breathless Season 2 Review: The stakes are higher in Joaquín Sorolla Hospital this season as the personal and professional lives of the doctors clash with one another. Plus, a new entry changes everything.

Breathless Season 2 Review

We are back with last year’s interesting entry into the world of medical dramas, with nothing new, but the drama is juicy. Season 2 of Breatheless increases the stakes, leaving the doctors to navigate not just life-and-death emergencies, but also the murkier terrains of ethics, power and survival. These themes are a staple in every medical drama out there, and even though they are done to death, they still leave us wanting to watch more.

The new season continues to bring us raw, human drama, but it increases the intensity of these situations, taking bolder swings at institutional conflict and personal collapse to keep us hooked to the drama. As always, there are several threads to consider in Breatheless Season 2, including Patricia’s battle with cancer and her relationship with Dr Nestor, the younger doctors being torn between loyalty, ambition and moral compromise and a whole lot more. The series combines personal arcs with sociopolitical commentary, along with discussions surrounding public vs private healthcare, caregivers’ burnout and the cost of care.

Season 2 continues to hold on to the dramatic energy of the last season and is a fast-paced watch from start to end. There isn’t a moment when things feel slow, and before you know it, things have jumped forward to somewhere crazier. That being said, I still don’t understand how any of this is new in any way. I think if you have watched any other medical drama, you have probably seen this one. I mean, there’s only so many ways one can show drama and, at this point, we have probably seen it all!

There are moments when the drama and conflict threaten to overwhelm the series. From love triangles to medical crises to political drama, the show has everything one can want, and it can get a bit much at times. The plots and subplots sometimes feel like they are fighting for attention. Thus, when this happens, you know things are going to drag at some points as well. Plus, some of the plots feel a bit too crazy and unbelievable at times.

Breathless Season 2 is fine for what it is – a dramatic medical drama with a lot of insanity. It brings home some good talking points, but mostly focuses on packing in as many punches as possible to get us to stay for the entire ride. And maybe it works, too, to an extent. With good performances and a formulaic storyline that mostly always works, this one’s a good watch for anyone who needs something familiar and intense.
