Carlos Cuerpo Caballero appointed as head of Spanish Ministry of Economy

The Spanish economist and politician, Carlos Cuerpo Caballero, has been appointed as the head of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Business, following Nadia Calviño’s resignation. She has been elected president of the European Investment Bank and assumes the role from the start of 2024. Caballero’s appointment was confirmed by Pedro Sánchez, taking over from his previous role as the secretary-general of the Treasury and International Finance. Meanwhile, María Jesús Montero, the former second vice president and Minister of Finance for the PSOE, will move into the position of first vice president.

Caballero’s educational credentials are impressive, with a master’s degree from the London School of Economics, a PhD in economics from the Autonomous University of Madrid, and an undergraduate degree in economics from the University of Extremadura. His professional career took off in 2008 when he joined the State’s Cuerpo Superior de Técnicos Comerciales y Economistas.

Despite his public role, Caballero has successfully kept his personal life private. There is limited information available regarding his familial details or marital status. This has led to speculation about his romantic life, though no confirmations have been made. His career in economics began in earnest when he joined the Spanish Corp of State Economists in 2008 as an economic analyst in the Directorate General for Macroeconomic Analysis and International Economics of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. In 2011, he embarked on a two-year secondment at the European Commission as a National Expert in the Directorate General of Economic and Financial Affairs, where he was responsible for implementing the Macroeconomic Imbalances Procedure, with a focus on observing and evaluating private sector balance balances and real estate markets.

Following his tenure in Brussels, he joined the Spanish Independent Authority for Fiscal Responsibility (AIReF). His duties included the examination of public debt sustainability and macroeconomic projections in the Economic Examination Division. In addition to his roles in economics, Caballero has also worked as an academic, teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels at various universities, including the London School of Economics, the University of Extremadura, the Center for Economic and Business Studies (CECO), and George Washington University.
