‘Enough!’ Minnesota residents blast local officials after mom and teen son attacked in driveway

Minnesota residents piled into a Minnetonka City Council meeting on Monday to push back against an uptick in crime in their neighborhood after a local mom and her 13-year-old son were violently attacked by carjackers in their own driveway.

According to victim Kelly Beason, the suspects managed to get into two cars in her garage after following her home from the grocery store last month.

“I saw a couple of guys run up our driveway, and I ran out to the garage to see what was going on. One was in my husband’s car. One was in my car, and one took off running when he saw me, and I chased him,” Beason told Fox News’s “Fox & Friends” on Wednesday. “Then we were in the street.”

The suspects dragged her from one of the cars as she grabbed their cell phones, Beason said. When her young son came out and called 911, he, too, was assaulted.

“When they were leaving, they drove at us with both stolen cars,” she said. “Both cars that they had were stolen.”

“I think once I saw my son out there, that kind of really brought things to light, how serious it was,” she said. “And especially when they went over and tried to take his phone and attacked him, that was [when] really the severity of it really came true.”

According to one resident at the packed meeting, “We, the law-abiding people of this community have had enough.”

“When these kinds of car thefts and [some] with guns are happening in a community like this, something needs to be done,” stated another resident.

Beason’s husband, Craig, blames the surge in crime on Hennepin County District Attorney Mary Moriarty.

“She stood on this position that she was not going to prosecute for crimes like this, which I think is just absolutely irresponsible at best,” he told Fox News.

“I think when I found that out and I started highlighting that, people just started stepping up,” he said, referring to the residents who showed up for the city council meeting.

People “are infuriated,” he added.

Unfortunately, Craig said he hasn’t seen the kind of change he had hoped for.

“I don’t feel that things are changing,” he said. “Every elected official that I’ve reached out to has sat down and talked to Kelley, myself about this, except the Hennepin County D.A., and the only person that can do something about this right now is the Hennepin County D.A.”

Suspect Romell Roshode Lewis, 21, was arrested on Tuesday for his alleged part in Kelly’s assault and charged with carjacking, robbery and burglary, according to FOX 9 in Minneapolis.

“Minnetonka city officials believe four juvenile thieves were also there at the time,” the outlet reports

At Monday’s meeting, Craig said his son is still experiencing “trauma” from the frightening incident.

“He wakes up in the middle of the night at every car that drives down the street –thinking that someone’s going to come back again,” he said, according to FOX 9.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, Minnetonka Mayor Brad Wiersum said his office shares the Beasons’ anger.

“We continue to stay in touch with the Beason family and share their concern and anger. Minnetonka police have arrested a man charged in the carjacking case and we expect to see other developments soon,” he said. “The city council welcomes the dialogue with community members at our recent meeting and appreciate the strong support for the work of our police department. Juvenile offenders have been involved in many of the region’s auto theft cases.”

“The city has shared its concern on several occasions with county and state partners about the prosecution of such cases.” he continued. “We need a criminal justice system that is working better on all levels to ensure young offenders are truly held accountable and receive the appropriate treatment and follow up.”
