Florida Doctor Thomas Shaknovsky Sued By Dead Patient’s Wife For Allegedly Removing Liver Instead Of Spleen

A blunder by a General Surgeon at the Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Hospital led to the untimely death of a patient.

The patient, William Bryan was operated by Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky and what was to be a routine splenectomy surgical procedure went wrong when Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky removed the patient’s Liver.

This led to profuse bleeding and blood loss which led to the death of the patient.

William Bryan’s wife has sued the hospital for her husband’s death.

The splenectomy was carried out on August 21, 2024.

William Bryan, 70 was on a visit to his rental property in Okaloosa County along with his family when he experienced severe pain in the left side of his abdomen.

He was taken to the Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Hospital where an abnormality in his spleen was diagnosed.

Shaknovsky and Dr. Christopher Bacani, the hospital’s Chief Medical Officer stated that immediate surgery was necessary and thye spleen had to be removed.

William Bryan’s family did not want to get the surgical process carried out in the hospital but Dr. Shaknovsky convinced the patient’s family that delaying the process would be dangerous.

However, Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky allegedly mistakenly removed the patient’s liver during the scheduled splenectomy, leading to the patient’s death.

William Bryan’s wife has sued the hospital for her husband’s death and her attorney stated that she is pursuing criminal and civil lawsuits against Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Hospital.

Mrs Bryan engaged the services of the attorney Joe Zarzaur of Zarzaur Law, P.A. to get justice for her husband.

According to Bryan’s family Thomas Shaknovsky mistakenly identified the removed liver as the spleen, telling them that it was severely diseased and had enlarged to four times its normal size.

It was after Bryan’s death it was discovered that the liver had been mistakenly removed; the spleen was still in the patient’s body.

In the lawsuit it is also alleged that this was not the first time Dr. Shaknovsky made a catastrophic mistake in his career.

In 2023, he mistakenly removed a portion of a patient’s pancreas instead of performing the intended adrenal gland resection.

Mrs Bryan Said,

“My husband died while helpless on the operating room table by Dr. Shaknovsky. I don’t want anyone else to die due to his incompetence at a hospital that should have known or knew he had previously made drastic, life-altering surgical mistakes.”

An American general surgeon, Dr Thomas J. Shaknovsky obtained his undergraduate degree from Loyola University.

He obtained a medical degree from Midwestern in Downers Grove, Illinois and completed a general surgery residency at Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, New Jersey.
