Former University Of Kentucky Student Sophia Rosing Pleads Guilty In Racist Tirade, Assault Case

A former University of Kentucky student, Sophia Rosing, 23, pleaded guilty to her racist tirade and assault on a fellow student in a campus dormitory in 2022.

Sophia Rosing, 23, of Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, was charged with four counts of misdemeanour assault, as well as disorderly conduct and public intoxication, and she pleaded guilty to all four charges as per a statement by Fayette County Commonwealth Attorney Kimberly Baird. In exchange, prosecutors agreed to reduce a felony assault on a police officer charge to a misdemeanour.

Ex-University of Kentucky Student Sophia Rosing Admits Guilt in Racial Assault Incident

According to Rosing’s attorney, Fred Peters, the plea followed intense negotiations between Rosing and the victims after the November 2022 incident, and the victims were allowed to confront Rosing about what happened. The negotiations finally led to the victims supporting Rosing’s plea.

The case burst into public knowledge after videos were posted online in 2022. The video showed Rosing struggling with the desk clerk and police while she repeatedly hurled racial slurs during the altercation.

The genesis of the charges can be traced to an incident on Nov. 6, 2022, when Rosing was involved in an altercation with a Black student, and the latter broke into a racial tirade against the fellow student.

As per information released by the University of Kentucky Police Department, it received a complaint of a woman assaulting staff members and sent a police officer to investigate. The Police Department further stated that the officer found Rosing, who was in a highly inebriated state, hurling racial slurs at a group of Black females. The officer removed her from the area.

Rosing repeatedly told the intervening police officer that she had a lot of money and gets special treatment. When the police officer tried to restrain her, she kicked and bit the officer’s hand.

Sophia Rosing was arrested and later permanently banned from the campus. The University of Kentucky President, Eli Capilouto, announced on social media that she would not be permitted to re-enroll at the university.

Capilouto stated,

“As a community working to prevent racist violence, we also must be committed to holding people accountable for their actions,”

Attorney Peters revealed that Rosing was forced to leave school in her senior years and struggled to land a job due to the criminal charges and subsequent publicity. He added that his client’s life had come to a standstill after this episode.

Sophia Rosing could be sentenced to a year in prison and also will have to complete 100 hours of community service. However, her lawyer stated that they plan to seek probation. The sentencing will happen on October 1.

The student who Rosing assaulted, Kylah Spring, said after the hearing,

“I told her that she didn’t break my spirit. That was one of the things I said the first time I ever spoke about what happened and that rings true today.
