All the 2023 major championships winners; Jon Rahm (Masters Tournament), Brooks Koepka (PGA Championship), Wyndham Clark (U.S. Open), and Brian Harman (The Open Championship), will be competing in the Italian capital.

Ryder Cup 2023: Competition format

The biennial event between Europe and the USA is contested in golf’s matchplay format, with players competing to win points for their team.

On the first two days, players compete in pairs, in direct competition with their opposing team.

These sessions are either ‘fourballs‘ (where each of the four players has their own ball, meaning four balls are in play on each hole) or ‘foursomes‘ (where each team has one ball, which the two players from that team take it in turns to hit). The pair to shoot the lowest score on each of the 18 holes wins that hole, and the pair who wins the most holes in their match gains a point for their team. If the scores are tied after the 18-hole round, the point is shared and each team is awarded half a point.

The final day of the event sees all 12 players for each team line up against an opponent in ‘singles‘ matches, where the same scoring rules apply.

The first team to 14.5 points will win the Ryder Cup. If the competition ends 14-14, the trophy will be retained by holders USA.

A full competition schedule is below.
