Koffee With Karan Season 8 Episode 12 Review: Zeenat Aman, Neetu Kapoor Bring in the Nostalgia

Zeenat Aman and Neetu Kapoor grace the Koffee Couch with Karan Johar this week, and the episode starts off with wonderful nostalgic energy as the two vivacious and inspirational ladies chat about their yesteryears and the work culture back then. They are both full of compliments for each other and share fun stories about their time together working. Neetu Kapoor even shares Zeenat Aman’s lunch during shoot days while discussing how she had a figure that everyone strove to have during that time!
Johar moves the conversation along and asks Kapoor about her last month with her husband, the late actor Rishi Kapoor, and she mentions that she doesn’t like remembering the bad things about his time with him and recounts the time that they spent in New York together and how he opened up with her and their children during those last months together. He then asks Aman about her resurfacing on social media and how she has been uploading amazing snippets that have taken netizens by storm.

They discuss the positives of Instagram and how it has given her a voice to reach out to millions. Johar talks about the post that she made for Parveen Babi and their supposed rivalry all those years back, and both the women share that there was no rivalry among the women and that they all had their space. Johar further questions whether they ever questioned why the women didn’t have their own space since celluloid was so male-dominated.
Neetu Kapoor mentions that when she was working, she was too young to understand anything, and by the time she did, she was married. Zeenat Aman mentions that since she was a part of some big movies that were uber-successful, she didn’t have the time to think about it, and the formula seemed to work, so she never felt anything different. Johar steers the conversation towards their time on sets, mentions an incident on the sets of Kabhie Kabhie and asks them about their experience. Both the women say that neither have partied or experienced the wild side of Bollywood because they had strict family situations that did not allow that.

They then move on to discussing more stories about their work and talk about how paparazzi reported back then and their perception as people in front of the audience. Aman mentions that it was traumatizing to find out about themselves in magazines because most of it was not true. The conversation then moves on to their relationship with Rekha and the bonds that they had with her and they both call her a warm and friendly person. They then discuss Hema Malini, which is probably the funniest part of the show.
They then discuss their home lives and how they both got tired of working all the time after a while and wanted to dedicate themselves to their families and children and thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. Kapoor mentions that staying together with family is extremely important since we all need to have a community around us and Johar brings up the topic of mental health and how it wasn’t an often-discussed subject. Aman mentions that one cannot hinge their self-love on fame and other’s perspectives.

They then talk about Raha and the fun fight that Neetu Kapoor is having with Raha’s maternal grandmother, Soni Razdan. Kapoor dotes on her granddaughter with compliments, and it is clear that she is extremely taken by her.
We then move on to the next quiz, but before that, they discuss fans sending them letters written in blood and how the concept of stars has changed over the years because nowadays, people can see stars everywhere to it doesn’t have the same ring it to anymore. In the quiz, they both have a fun time with the different questions and remember their work – in the end, Neetu Kapoor wins with 13 points.
Afterwards, they discuss forgetting the time they spent working since it was such a busy time in both of their lives. Aman mentions that she prefers staying in the present and not thinking about the past, but writing on Instagram has brought forth some memories. We move on to the Rapid Fire round, and Johar tries to get them to spill some piping tea, but both keep their lips tightly shut, although Zeenat Aman does hint at a little tea for the fans.
The episode comes to an end with Karan Johar recounting a funny story about the first time he got to know about playback singing after watching one of Zeenat Aman’s songs, which makes all three laugh. Aman mentions her equation with Johar’s father, Yash Johar, and mentions that he was a kind and loving man who embodied generosity. Neetu Kapoor agrees with that feeling, and the two women sign the cups and keep it on the Koffee Wall of Fame.
Koffee With Karan Season 8 Episode 12 Review

The latest episode has been a nostalgic journey, as it is when yesteryear’s stars grace the couch. I think the conversation in this season was quite warm and interesting and although no tea was spilled, it’s always nice to hear behind-the-scenes stories of the time. It’s also interesting to note how at peace both the actors are with their past roles and women’s place in movies back in the day because, let’s be honest, female characters were (and mostly still are) an afterthought and a filler without them much to do other than dancing and looking cute. Although both the women mention their truths, I felt that there was more to be addressed in that sphere and we were robbed of a more important dialogue.
Apart from that, both the game rounds were fun, but I must say, things seemed a bit scripted, and I missed the flow and the energy from episode 10, which had Sharmila Tagore on the couch with Saif Ali Khan. Although the context is different for the two, the episode, personally, missed a little zing.
That being said, I enjoyed this episode more than the one featuring this generation’s actors, who have not much to say and no perspective to give. But I guess more exposure does that to you, unfortunately.
Koffee With Karan Season 8 is streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
