Marvel Confirms It’s Introducing a New Iron Man, Spinning Out of Tony Stark’s Death

Summary
- Marvel introduces a new Iron Man following Tony Stark’s death in Avengers: Twilight, featuring an older Captain America in a dark future.
- The new Iron Man wears all-red armor and may be a villain working with SHIELD.
- Avengers: Twilight #1 is coming January 17, 2024, from Marvel Comics.
In the upcoming Avengers: Twilight, Marvel will officially debut a new Iron Man following the tragic and “gruesome” death of Tony Stark. The series follows an older Captain America on one final mission in a world “where the Avengers are strangers and his friends are long dead.”
New solicit information released by Marvel has revealed key information about the series, which is coming from Chip Zdarsky and Daniel Acuña. Cover art from Acuña, Alex Ross, Felipe Massafera, Phil Noto, Taurin Clarke and Simone Bianchi showcases the new Iron Man, who wears all-red armor.
The summary for issue #3 also teases the fate of Tony Stark in this dark future, asking:
Off the shores of New York City sits THE RAFT, a government facility full of secrets and danger! Can CAPTAIN AMERICA infiltrate it before the new IRON MAN gives him the same gruesome fate as TONY STARK?

What Is the Punk Iron Man’s Link to Tony Stark?
Promo material for the series showed Iron Man lying seemingly dead in a smoldering crater, as well as a younger hero being mentored by a floating, holographic head while working on various Iron Man tech. It seems this younger hero (perhaps Iron Man’s son or grandson) will be the red-clad Iron Man, though it’s possible he’ll be introduced as a villain or rogue agent. Preview pages shared by Marvel show a silver Iron Man attacking Steve Rogers, although whether this is the new hero or a member of SHIELD’s fascistic ‘Iron Cops’ is still up in the air.
Will the New Iron Man Be Hero or Villain?
In a World Without the Avengers, Who Is Iron Man?
Many stories have given Tony Stark protégés, however it’s rare that they fully take on his legacy as Iron Man. Moreover, since Avengers: Twilight depicts a world where the Avengers are no longer seen as heroes, is a new Iron Man even likely to be on the same side as Captain America? Issue #3’s synopsis confirms the two will fight, however it’s common for Marvel heroes to duke it out before working together. The series will also include an adult Ms. Marvel who appears with Cap and Iron Man on several covers, making it likely that at least by the end of the series, Captain America will have forged the world’s remaining superheroes into the Avengers roster this dark future needs.
What happened to Tony Stark, and how does his death tie into the end of the Avengers and the new Iron Man? Only Avengers: Twilight has the answers, but the art above is making it really hard to wait until 2024 to find out more about the new Iron Man.
