Gerwig: First of all, it sounds and looks incredible. This is the most satisfying way to watch it for me, and it feels like it really gets inside you. I like the feeling of being nearly overwhelmed by it.
Prieto: It was great, but seeing it on this big screen with the sound, it’s a new experience and I think that the movie is an experience, but this really takes it to another level.
What To Expect From Barbie’s IMAX Release
In addition to the sound and scale that only the large format can offer, Barbie‘s post-credits scene, which was cut from the original theatrical version, has been re-added for the IMAX release. As revealed by an image shared by Tom Clark, who worked as a dancer on Barbie, the movie originally included a post-credits scene featuring a physical cameo from Helen Mirren, who acts as the movie’s narrator. The post-credits scene sees Mirren unexpectedly walking in on Midge (Emerald Fennell) giving birth, who was pregnant throughout the movie in reference to the discontinued version of the doll.
Barbie‘s IMAX release could also provide the final boost it needs to join the top 10 highest-grossing movies of all time in the United States. It’s currently sitting in the 11th place spot with $626,647,793 grossed, and it needs an additional $26 million in order to pass 2015’s Jurassic World and crack the domestic top 10. The Barbie movie releases in IMAX starting on September 22 for one week only, so it’s clear that its incredible box office run isn’t over yet.
