Netflix is back with the infamous Murdaugh Murders A Southern Scandal season 2 which looks into the case with more depth and follows the trial that finally came to an end. The second season interviews many connected to the Murdaugh family as directors Michael Gasparro and Julia Willoughby Nason return to put an end to all that happened in the county.

This three-episode docuseries continues the investigation and trial of the murders and how substantial evidence shocked the community forever. The series also brings the lives of the Murdaughs and Paul Murdaugh after the boat crash incident into light.

The synopsis of the series reads:

Shocking tragedies shatter a tight-knit South Carolina community and expose the horrifying secrets of its most powerful family.

How Was Alex Murdaugh Found to be Guilty?

In the final episode of Murdaugh Murders a Southern Scandal Season 2, we see the untangling of Alex’s web of lies as “Cousin Eddie” breaks his silence and revelations pop up one after another. Curtis Edward Smith aka Cousin Eddie who has been Alex’s partner in his fraud was pointed at by Alex when he was reported to have been shot three months after the murder.

Curtis told the police that Alex had asked him to shoot him as the police had been suspecting him of the murders. This shocked Curtis and he refused to do so and left their brief meeting. However, Alex had no plans of letting him go so easily and when he was shot, he discreetly blamed it on Curtis.

However, with the police already suspecting Alex of the murders due to the surfacing of his video which was taken on Paul’s phone, there was no way that he could escape this easily. Later, with the help of digital footprint investigators found that the Murdaughs have usually been very active when using their phones. It was at the time of the murder that three people had almost no activity on their cell phones that night.

Not just that but by getting into Paul’s cell phone, the investigators found more crucial evidence from the night of the murders and brought in the infamous kennel video. The video was played in the courtroom and it didn’t take long for silence to loom over the place when the murderer was revealed.

The video was that of Paul filming his friend’s dog to send the video across and voices of Paul and Maggie could be heard in the background. However, the shock came over when all of a sudden, Alex’s voice was heard.

This shocked everyone and there was no way to refute this evidence which was of his presence around them just some time before the murder. Left with no choice, Alex then took the stand to testify and his words when asked why he lied all this time were nothing but, “Oh, what a tangled web we weave.”

These words shocked everyone as they did not see any remorse of any kind on his face, instead, he went ahead to deny Shelly’s testimony. Finally, the jury’s decision came after this evidence was brought to court and they found Alex Murdaugh guilty of the murder of his wife and son.

It was Alex’s unreliable and constantly changing alibi, his persuasion to change the alibis of others, trying to divert the minds of people, his attitude and finally, Paul’s video that helped prove him guilty of the murders.

What Happened to Alex Murdaugh?

Following the trial where Alex was found guilty, on March 3, 2023, the day of his sentencing arrived. The judge once again asked him what he meant by the words that he said at the end only to get a very vague answer.

The judge then called out his sentence which was of lifetime imprisonment for both the murders individually which will be served simultaneously and with no parole. Alex Murdaugh is now in prison serving his sentence.

What Happened to Buster Murdaugh?

Buster Murdaugh now lives with his girlfriend in a condo in South Carolina; he has refused to go back to the place where his mother and brother were brutally murdered. Later, he finally broke his silence on the case during an interview where he adamantly believed that his father was innocent and the real killer was out in the open.

He spoke of how he fears for his life every day and while he accepts that his father could be a “psychopath” he is not the murderer.
