On the morning of Aug. 24, an off-duty member of the LAPD’s reserve program called 911 regarding a sighting of a possible burglary suspect in Bakersfield, California. While on the line with the dispatcher, the cop’s effort to scare off the suspect allegedly “going in and out of houses” was met with gunfire.

Later identified as 29-year-old Jason Taylor Boles, the man seen wearing a gray tank top in security footage walked up to a residence where he rang the doorbell. Moments later, he crossed the front of the home to the neighboring property where he reached into a garbage can and removed an article of clothing and, evidently, a firearm.

“What happened, huh? I don’t have anything,” Boles could be heard saying to the off-duty cop who had circled the cul-de-sac in his personal vehicle. When the cop told him to “Get out of here,” the suspect could be seen opening fire causing the officer to drive off and seek safety while requesting help.

Officers from the Bakersfield Police Department were dispatched to the scene and a statement released Saturday along with the footage explained the “officers who discharged their firearms were identified as Sergeant Dennis Eddy, Officer Brandon Price, and Sergeant Ryan McWilliams. Sergeant Eddy has been employed as a police officer with the Bakersfield Police Department for approximately 22 years. Sergeant McWilliams has been employed as a police officer with the Bakersfield Police Department for approximately 18 years. Officer Price has been employed as a police officer with the Bakersfield Police Department for approximately 5 years.”

When the officers arrived, a second officer-involved shooting commenced after the suspect had been instructed “Show me your hands. We will not shoot at you if you put both hands out.”

Attempts to get Boles to surrender ultimately led to shots fired and his being fatally struck and pronounced dead on the scene. In the exchange, “Officer Price was struck by gunfire during the incident. He had a minor injury, received medical aid on scene, and has recovered from his injury.”

Speaking with KGET news, Boles’ mother contended that her son, whom she confirmed had been released from jail two days prior to the incident, was only in the neighborhood looking for a friend, that he had struggled with homelessness and addiction, and that he likely opened fire because he had felt threatened.

Following the incident, and in accordance with standard procedure, the officers had been placed on administrative leave for the duration of the investigation of their use of lethal force. It was further noted by the BPD that, “At this point in the investigation, Bakersfield Police have not identified a victim of a burglary or location of a burglary related to this incident.”

“The Bakersfield Police Department is handling the criminal investigation. The Los Angeles Police Department is conducting an administrative investigation of the Los Angeles Police Department reserve officer,” the release concluded noting, “A firearm was recovered from the deceased subject.”
