Pochettino now ready to axe Tottenham Hotspur target at Chelsea
Tottenham Hotspur target Trevoh Chalobah is now expected to leave the club in January with Mauricio Pochettino happy for him to go.
Trevoh Chalobah is expected to be Chelsea’s first major departure when the January transfer window opens.
That is according to The Mirror, who claim that Mauricio Pochettino is ready to axe Chalobah in January.
The writing was probably on the wall for Chalobah in the summer when Wesley Fofana picked up a major injury.
Rather than promote Chalobah, Chelsea went back into the market and splashed huge money on signing Axel Disasi.
Chalobah has no role to play at Chelsea and, whilst he is out injured right now, the situation probably wouldn’t be any different if he was fit.
Chelsea ready to axe Trevoh Chalobah
The Mirror now suggest that Pochettino has increased transfer powers at Chelsea and is ready to wield the axe by selling Chalobah.
It’s highlighted that Bayern Munich tried to sign Chalobah in the summer with both Bayern and Chelsea now expecting the defender to go.
Bayern may well be back in the hunt for Chalobah come January but they will face major competition for the 24-year-old.
Fabrizio Romano reported on deadline day in September that Tottenham were keen to sign Chalobah but no deal was done.
TEAMtalk suggest that Tottenham remain keen ahead of January but face competition from West Ham United and Fulham.
My view: Tottenham may not appeal to Chalobah
We can understand why Tottenham would want to sign a homegrown centre back.
Links to Lloyd Kelly and Tosin Adarabioyo highlighted a desire to add a homegrown option with Spurs needing more of those players.
The problem is that Chalobah would be leaving Chelsea for first-team action elsewhere – and Tottenham already have a settled centre back pairing.
Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero have impressed together this season and Chalobah would risk sitting on the sidelines watching them shine.
Tottenham may hope that staying in London will appeal to Chalobah, but we can imagine that talks with Chelsea will be tricky enough anyway.
