Renowned chef Fatima Sydow passes away after battling soft tissue sarcoma
Fatima Sydow, the renowned celebrity chef and cookbook author, has sadly passed away at the age of fifty. Her family confirmed her demise on the 19th of December, 2023, following a courageous three-year battle with soft tissue sarcoma. The culinary world mourns the loss of a beloved personality who breathed her last at Vincent Pallotti Hospital, Cape Town, surrounded by her loved ones.
Sydow was an iconic figure in the culinary realm, known for her vibrant personality and passion for preserving her Cape Malay heritage. She started her culinary journey at the tender age of nine, under the tutelage of her mother. Inspired by her mother’s expertise in creating culinary wonders with limited resources, Fatima took her first steps towards fame with the creation of her Facebook page in 2011.
Her first cookbook, “The Journey of Cape Malay Cooking with Fatima Sydow,” published in 2015, catapulted her to prominence. She also co-hosted the popular television programme “Kaap, Kerri, and Koesisters” with her twin sister, Gadija Sydow. However, her influence extended beyond the confines of the kitchen. She used the universal appeal of food to foster love, peace, and unity.
Her diagnosis of soft tissue sarcoma in 2020 did not deter her from continuing her invaluable contributions to the food industry. Despite the challenges posed by her illness, Fatima became a symbol of strength and resilience, with unwavering support from her loved ones.
She remained steadfast in her humble origins from the Cape Flats, generously sharing her Cape Malay heritage through her television appearances, social media posts, and recipes. Her influence reached out to millions across the globe, making her a cherished figure in the culinary world.
The family expressed their deep sorrow at Fatima’s passing in their statement and appreciated the outpouring of love and support during these challenging times. They will soon announce the details concerning her funeral prayers.
