Scarlett Johansson provides a positive update on the Tower of Terror movie after her Disney lawsuit and the end of dual Hollywood strikes. The theme-park attraction was previously adapted into Disney’s 1997 Tower of Terror TV movie starring Steven Guttenberg and Kirsten Dunst, though the studio has been trying to get another adaptation off the ground for years. Johansson boarded the project as a star and producer around the same time she leveled a lawsuit against Disney for releasing Black Widow simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+, though that lawsuit has since been settled.
During a recent appearance on the TODAY show, Johansson provided a positive update on her Tower of Terror movie now that the lawsuit and strikes have been resolved.
Now that the WGA strike is over, Johansson says they have resumed working on the script for the Tower of Terror movie, though she also underlined how huge an undertaking the project is. Read her full comments below:
Now that the writers’ strike is all over with, we’re finally able to dive back into polishing up this script. It’s a massive, huge undertaking.
Everything We Know About Scarlett Johansson’s Tower of Terror Movie
Though Johansson did not mention him by name, Josh Cooley is reportedly writing the script for the Tower of Terror movie. The filmmaker already has a close working relationship with Disney, having collaborated with Pixar to much success. Cooley co-wrote Inside Out and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. He followed that up by directing Toy Story 4 and won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film. Johansson, an Oscar-nominated actress for Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit, is no stranger to Disney, having starred as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade.
Having won an Oscar for writing Jojo Rabbit‘s adapted screenplay, Taika Waititi is reportedly attached to direct the Tower of Terror movie. The filmmaker is also best known for his work under the Disney umbrella, having directed Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder (and an episode of The Mandalorian). However, Waititi will have his hands full for the foreseeable future given he just recently revealed his Star Wars movie is still in the works. With an accomplished writer, director, and star attached, the Tower of Terror reboot should be interesting to see when it finally gets made.
Tower of Terror (1997) is not available on any streaming service due to a rights dispute between Disney and MGM.
