Seven Wrexham players could be axed after promotion as Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney face tough decision –

Seven Wrexham players could leave Wrexham after their promotion to League One.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s Wrexham secured a second successive promotion on Saturday, with the club sealing their place in League One next season with a thumping 6-0 win over Forest Green.

The Hollywood actors took over the Welsh football club in 2021, and two years later, they were promoted to the Football League following a 15-year absence.

The weekend saw fans pour onto the pitch to celebrate at the Racecourse Ground as Phil Parkinson’s side made it two wins from two.

Deadpool star Reynolds wrote on X: “A few years ago, if you told me I would be crying tears of joy over a football match taking place in North Wales, you would be Rob McElhenney.

“Congrats to Wrexham and to my co-chairman in crime. Double up the town! This is the ride of our lives.”

Meanwhile, McElhenney, who co-created It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, said he was watching the game from Los Angeles and wrote on X: “No words.”

He also heaped praise on Wrexham’s star striker Paul Mullin, who struck twice in the first half to help his side to a 4-0 half-time lead.

“This may be my favourite goal of his. Not a game-winner or anything fancy. Just perseverance, hustle and grit,” he wrote.

“@PMullin7 knows the people in that stadium didn’t pay their hard-earned wage to watch guys give 95%. They deserve 100% and he gives it to them All. The. Time.”

Naturally, like any promotion, a squad overhaul is likely to take place over the summer, and that is set to be helped by several players being out of contract.

Centre-backs Aaron Hayden, Jordan Tunnicliffe and captain Ben Tozer all see their contracts expire at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Luke Young, the club’s longest-serving player, is another whose current deal expires on June 30.

The other players out of contract are defender Callum McFadzean and goalkeeping duo Rob Lainton and Mark Howard.
