Randall Park had his first directorial debut in 2023 with the feature film Shortcomings released last August following its initial Sundance Film Festival debut. In February 2024, the movie will be bound for Netflix in the United States, with it due to touch down on February 1st.

Starring Justin H. Min (who will soon appear again on Netflix for the final season of The Umbrella Academy) and Sherry Cola (Good Trouble, Joy Ride), the romantic comedy is about a Berkeley arthouse movie theater manager starting to navigate single life after his girlfriend departs for a three-month internship in New York City.

The cast also features Ally Maki, Tavi Gevinson, Debby Ryan, Sonoya Mizuno, and director Randall Park (Fresh Off the Boat, Always Be My Maybe) even makes a brief appearance.

Certified Fresh on RottenTomatoes, the movie has received strong reviews from critics and audiences alike, currently sitting at an 84% critic and 85% audience scores.

Justin Chang for the Los Angeles Times concluded in his positive review, “Tomine’s compact, easily digestible story — segmented here into even more easily digestible chapters, complete with cutesy pastel-hued title cards — moves along pleasingly enough but hasn’t been given the vigorous comic reimagination it cries out for.”

The movie arrives on Netflix as part of the much-publicized Sony Pictures’ first window deal. That deal has been in effect since 2022 in the United States, and most theatrical releases arrive on Netflix around 120 days after their initial theatrical debut.

This is one of several Sony Pictures Classics movies to have made their way onto Netflix US over the past few years. However, it’s worth noting they’re not as easily predictable as main titles from the Columbia Pictures banner.

Among the SPC titles you can currently stream are The Son, Living, and It Ain’t Over.
