- Thor 5 rumors suggest Chris Hemsworth’s potential death in the MCU, aligning with his previous comments on closing Thor’s story.
- A fifth Thor movie ending in Thor’s death would make sense, giving closure to his character and potentially reuniting with both Jane Foster and Loki.
- Thor’s death in a final film could fix the issue of Thor: Love and Thunder being criticized for being too light, instead offering a more epic and serious story by comparision.
New Thor 5 rumors make a shocking Chris Hemsworth prediction for the MCU even more likely. Having last appeared in 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder, the titular Odinson is currently raising his newly adopted daughter named Love. However, it’s possible that a new movie could end the Thor franchise in a very shocking way.
In a new interview with Inverse, Thor: Ragnarok and Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi revealed that he will not be returning to direct a potential Thor 5 for Marvel Studios. However, Waititi also claims that he’s heard Chris Hemsworth is in talks to star in the potential next chapter. Because this is the biggest tease thus far that a Thor 5 is actually in development, it does support a major prediction made by Hemsworth himself about the end of Thor’s journey in the MCU.
Chris Hemsworth Teased Thor’s Death In 2022
Is It Time For The Hero’s Journey To End?
Back in 2022, Chris Hemsworth reflected on Thor: Love and Thunder in an interview with Digital Spy where he shared his belief that there’s still more to say regarding Thor’s story. However, he also suggested that a potential Thor 5 should perhaps be the God of Thunder’s final adventure, one that ends in the Mighty Avenger’s death:
“I feel like we’d probably have to close the book if I ever did it again, you know what I mean? I feel like it probably warrants that. I feel like it’d probably be the finale, but that’s not based on anything anyone’s told me or any sort of plans. You have this birth of a hero, the journey of a hero, then the death of a hero, and I don’t know – am I at that stage? Who knows?”
While perhaps initially surprising, a fifth Thor movie focused on his final journey makes sense. After all, four movies alone are already the most a single hero has had thus far in the MCU. A potential Thor 5 could be a dedicated film that officially closes the door on the God of Thunder before he goes to Valhalla to be reunited with Jane Foster who sacrificed herself in Love and Thunder.Additionally, a final Thor movie would also be the perfect opportunity for Thor and Loki to reunite one last time as well. It would finally fulfill the former God of Mischief’s promise made at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War that they’d see each other again, even if the MCU’s current Loki is outside of time, having become much different than the Loki whom Thor knew in the main MCU as seen in both seasons of Marvel’s Loki. To that end, a Thor/Loki reunion in the MCU is something both Marvel Studios and Loki actor Tom Hiddleston seem to be interested in.
Why Thor’s Death Can Fix A Big Thor: Love & Thunder Issue
Love and Thunder Was Seen As “Too Light”
On the whole, a core criticism of 2022’s Love and Thunder was that it was too light. Many felt that it had far too many jokes that disrupted the film’s pacing, especially when it came to the movie’s more serious topics such as Jane Foster’s battle with cancer before her heroic sacrifice, her relationship with Thor, as well as the sympathetic motivations of its villain Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale). However, a potential Thor 5 focusing on one last ride before Thor’s death would hopefully fix the previous film’s mistakes, offering a final opportunity for a major MCU film of epic proportions starring the God of Thunder before he finally makes it to Valhalla.
