Trending Boycott Dunkin Donuts Controversy Explained

Trending Boycott Dunkin Donuts Controversy Explained

Dunkin Donuts, the well-known American brand for Coffee and baked goods found itself in the midst of a raging controversy.

Some users on X have initiated a new hashtag about boycotting Dunkin Donuts on August 8.

This is not the first time that users have banded together on a social media platform against a particular brand.

However, most of the tweets are vague and ambiguous and most viewers are having a hard time trying to figure out what the fuss is all about.

Why users are clamouring for Boycott Dunkin Donuts?

The genesis of #BoycottDunkinDonuts trend on social media can be traced to the company’s advertising policies.

Chris Pavlovski, founder of the Rumble video platform revealed that Dunkin instructed him that the platform would have to drop right-wing commentator Steven Crowder and also not entertain right-wing culture or the company would not spend ad bucks with them.

Pavlovski responded to Dunkin and stated,

“No, we don’t discriminate. All cultures are welcome to Rumble.”

This is not the first time that Steven Crowder has had his brush with controversies.

Earlier he was suspended and demonetized by YouTube several times and this led to his moving his channel permanently to Rumble.

Even though the platform had a much lower viewer base, Crowder managed to rake in hundreds of thousands of views per stream and remains an influential right-wing voice.

The latest boycott trend is one more instance of the ongoing tussle between advertisers, content platforms, and content creators in the digital age.

Proponents of #BoycottDunkinDonuts contend that Dunkin’s alleged stance infringes on free speech.

However, there is no lack of supporters of Dunkin Donuts’ decision who term the decision as a reasonable business decision to protect brand image.

It is another instance of the tightrope and balancing act which companies have to follow in a very polarized media landscape especially when there are content creators who cater to specific ideological audiences.

Companies have to balance advertising strategies with potential backlash from various consumer groups.

There have been no official comments from Dunkin Donuts while its X account has gone private to prevent any fallout from this fiasco.

Many users mentioned Bud Light which was the boycott in 2023 which set into motion the conservatives cancelling the culture of corporations demanding Duncan Donuts to receive equal treatment.

How much this boycott will impact Dunkin’s business or advertising policies in the long term will be seen.
