Union boss rips Trump’s planned speech to striking autoworkers on night of next GOP debate

Donald Trump will sit out the second GOP presidential primary next week in California at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, opting instead to travel to Detroit to deliver a primetime speech before current and former union members.
That’s according to The New York Times, which cited two Trump advisers with knowledge of the plans — the newspaper reported that the former president is “injecting himself into the labor dispute between striking autoworkers and the nation’s leading auto manufacturers.”
United Auto Workers Union President Shawn Fain is not happy with Trump’s reported plan, releasing a statement denouncing the leading Republican presidential candidate.
“Every fiber of our union is being poured into fighting the billionaire class and an economy that enriches people like Donald Trump at the expense of workers,” Fain said in the release.
“We can’t keep electing millionaires and billionaires that don’t have any understanding of what it is like to live paycheck to paycheck, and struggle to get by and expecting them to solve the problems of the working class,” he added.
In an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” that was aired Sunday, Trump told union members that Fain is not looking out for their best interests.
“The auto workers are being sold down the river by their leadership, and their leadership should endorse Trump,” he said.
The Times characterized the planned speech as “counterprogramming,” noting that Trump sat for an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson that was aired online during the first GOP debate.
“The decision to go to Michigan just days after the United Auto Workers went on strike shows the extent to which Mr. Trump wants to be seen as looking past his primary rivals — and the reality that both he and his political apparatus are already focused on the possibility of a rematch with President Biden,” the paper reported.
United Association of Union Plumbers and Pipefitters (UA) General President Mark McManus also released a statement calling Trump a “fraud” — the union endorsed President Biden in July.
“Our members across this country and in the great state of Michigan know that Donald Trump does not care about working men and women,” the statement reads. “It was President Trump who passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 that didn’t just help the rich get richer; it eliminated the ability to write off union dues. Simply put: As President, Donald Trump continued his career-long practice of stiffing workers so that he could get rich.”
Trump carried Michigan in the 2016 election, but Biden won the state by more than 150,000 votes in the COVID-marred 2020 election that featured widespread use of unsolicited mail-in ballots.
