Users Are Shifting To Bluesky In Droves After Brazil’s X Ban

After the unprecedented action of banning social media platform X in Brazil, users are shifting to Bluesky in droves.

The social media platform X was banned in Brazil after a Supreme Court order and Brazilian netizens are turning to an alternate social network named Bluesky.

Brazilian Users Flock to Bluesky Following Ban on Platform X

In a post which could not conceal its glee, the official Bluesky account said in a post,

“Brazil, you’re setting new all-time-highs for activity on Bluesky. There will almost certainly be some outages and performance issues,”

Bluesky developer Paul Frazee said,

“We’ve never seen traffic like this. Hang with us!”

The app looks and works just like X but it is a decentralized social media platform that’s built on the AT Protocol (which is also developed by Bluesky).

Paul Frazee revealed that the platform is seeing 1,000 events per second and it is a “new milestone” — on its “relay,” which essentially functions as the firehose of data for the platform.

However, Frazee cautioned that there could be some outages and performance issues because the platform has never seen traffic like this.

However, it is not clear if the ban on X had any ripple effect on other social media giants such as Mastodon which is another decentralized platform and Meta which runs Threads, which has links to the fediverse.

Elon Musk-owned social media platform X which was formerly known as Twitter was banned in Brazil after a directive from Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes as a fallout of Musk’s failure to appoint a new legal representative for X in Brazil.

Supreme Court Justice de Moraes has ordered the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) to enforce its directive and restrict access to X within 24 hours.

He also directed Apple and Google to remove X from their mobile app stores within five days.

A fine of R$50,000 (approximately ₹7.48 lakh) will be imposed on individuals who will try to circumvent the ban via a virtual private network (VPN).
