Why Did California Pass  At DNC Kamala Harris' Roll Call? Read On To Know The Reasons?

The DNC conventions are going on in full swing and on Wednesday the ceremonial DNC roll call for nominating Kamala Harris as the party’s nominee for the forthcoming US Presidential elections to be held in November 2024 was conducted.

Delegates from each state made their votes known and as per tradition, the names of the States were called in an alphabetical order. However, to the surprise of many the names of California and Minnesota were not called and they passed to the next state.

Kamala Harris was made the nominee of the Democratic Party officially on August 6 after a virtual roll call and the DNC roll call was just a formality since the Presidential and the Vice Presidential candidates had already been decided. Therefore the California and Minnesota walkover has surprised many people. Why Did California Pass At the DNC; Read on to know the reason.

It is the custom at the DNC that the home state of the nominee generally passes and near the end the deciding vote is cast to clinch the nomination. Both California and Minnesota are the home states of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz and both states will vote at the end and thus will be formally the last state to nominate the candidate. Tim Walz is the Governor of Minnesota and let Harris’ California and its delegates put her over the top as the Democratic nominee.

The state-by-state roll call at the DNC is mostly ceremonial and offers the elected nominees and future political actors a chance to project themselves on the big stage. The political figures also get an opportunity to make small but effective speeches giving a piece of their thoughts before casting their votes for the Democratic nominee.

However, what caught the eyes of the experts were notable absentees and two senators were conspicuous by their absence – Senators Jon Tester of Montana and Sherrod Brown of Ohio who were nowhere to be seen. The two are considered the most endangered senators since Trump had won from Montana and Ohio.

The DNC featured speeches by many notable speakers including former US President Barack Obama who said he deeply appreciated Joe Biden and passing the torch to Kamala Harris was the right thing to do.

One more state which passed its turn to another state was Alabama which passed its turn to Delaware and let the roll call start with President Joe Biden’s home state. The 50 states and U.S. territories will be represented by 57 delegates who will participate in the voice vote.
