14-Year-Old Student Charged With Murder of Four, Will Be Tried As An Adult

A 14-year-old student, Colt Gray, a student at Apalachee High School, has been taken into custody in the Georgia high school shooting and has been charged with the murder of four people.

He will be tried as an adult.

Nine other people were wounded in the incident.

The FBI has also stated that the agency had investigated the suspect and his father a year ago. The four people who were killed in the incident included two students and two teachers.

The two teachers who were killed were Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Christina Irimie, 53, while the two students who lost their lives in the shooting were identified as Mason Schermerhorn, 14, and Christian Angulo, also 14.

The nine persons who were injured include eight students and one teacher and are presently undergoing treatment for gunshot wounds in different hospitals of the city.

The suspect was challenged by the police within minutes after the shooting, and he immediately surrendered without resistance and was taken into custody.

The first reports of the shooting were received at around 10:20 local time. The school had around 1900 students. Local Sheriff Jud Smith stated that law enforcement was at the scene within minutes and two school resource officers assigned to the school challenged the shooter, who immediately surrendered.

Officials also stated that no motive was seen for the shooting, and they do not know of any targets at this time.

The FBI has revealed that it had visited the suspect and interviewed him and his father after complaints of threats posted online, which also included pictures of guns. However, the shooter’s father had stated that he had hunting guns, but the shooter did not have unsupervised access to them. The suspect had also denied that he had made online threats.

The FBI further stated that there was no cause for any arrest. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office also stated that they had alerted schools in the location to monitor the teen.

President Joe Biden in a statement said he and the first lady are mourning the deaths of innocent lives. The President also stated that he is working to prevent gun-related violence, which included the enactment of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act into law.

Vice President and Democratic Party presidential candidate also expressed her shock and deep sorrow at the senseless tragedy. She also stated the need for a ban on assault weapons, better red flag laws, and background checks.
