Ahsoka has returned for the season finale and the fight between Ahsoka and Elsbeth is soaking up much of the spotlight. While some have argued it is the “greatest duel in Star Wars history,” others have offered counter arguments that cannot be ignored.
From Star Wars‘ Dave Filoni, Ahsoka has proven to be a huge hit with franchise fans ever since its first episodes premiered on Disney+ in August 2023. Whether it’s the incredible return and live-action debut of Ezra Bridger or the imposing threat of Thrawn, there has been no shortage of elements to praise. Ahsoka episode 8 stirs debate with Elsbeth fight
In the Ahsoka season finale, the titular protagonist is joined by Sabine Wren and Ezra as they’re darting for the Chimaera and the Eye of Sion. They’re intercepted by Elsbeth and the Night Troopers, facilitating an unforgettable lightsaber battle between her and Ahsoka that one fan recently argued is actually the “Best duel in Star Wars History.”
Even before this latest clash, this was always a hot debate among franchise fans.
“Looks fanmade,” one scathingly replied to the claim, and others have stepped up to debate it too. “Disagree,” one put while sharing a GIF of Darth Maul fighting Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi in The Phantom Menace, a prequel that has undergone something of a reappraisal in recent years.
On the other hand, somebody helped reinforce the merits of the “greatest duel” claim, hailing the fight as “the rematch we didn’t expect”.
“Certainly was up there,” another suggested. “I still think AnakinVObiWan and ObiWanVMaul were some of the best saber fights, however, this one felt really, really close to those and was super well done. Kudos to the choreographers and actors. Really enjoyed seeing this.”
The Darth Maul fight is definitely a popular choice for the franchise’s greatest: “Three of Maul’s fights beat this, and Anakin and Obi-Wan’s fight also beat this.”
Getting into the nitty gritty of why it’s not the best, somebody weighed in that there’s “Too much spinning. That’s the worst tactical move possible, and they don’t go fast enough to even make it look like they are using it for momentum. Did not enjoy this one.”
“Agreed,” a like-minded fan replied to the above. “It’s also bland, two-dimensional, and lacking intensity. They need fight choreographers who understand fighting.”
Other duels cited by passionate fans include Anakin and Obi-Wan vs Dooku from Revenge Of The Sith, as well as Anakin vs Obi-Wan from the same movie.
Once again defending Elsbeth and Ahsoka’s gripping confrontation, a viewer added that the “choreography was insanely good, camera work was a little weak though, but big props to the show’s fight coordinator.”
Only time will tell as to whether the Ahsoka finale duel will be crowned king, and it could very well be appreciated more and more with time, just as the prequels have been.
Is Elsbeth dead in Ahsoka?
Yes, after working together with Thrawn, Elsbeth stands against Ahsoka and is slain by the series’ titular heroine.
Elsbeth’s death on Peridea is a triumphant moment but it’s somewhat dwarfed when Ahsoka and her crew are unsuccessful in putting an end to the evil of Thrawn and the Grand Mothers.
Ahsoka remains stranded on Peridea at the end of the finale, and with no season 2 confirmed the fans are sure to be left in suspense for quite some time.
