Family Guy is due for a big change when it returns, with Fox making scheduling shifts. The Griffins have been a staple of the network’s animation block, fitting right alongside a heavyweight like The Simpsons. It’s even crossed over with the animated staple, at times, along with Bob’s Burgers, as it’s been a consistent fixture in a specific spot that hasn’t shifted for an impressively long time.

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed a notable change as part of Fox’s midseason schedule. Family Guy season 22 is set to air on a night other than Sunday, as it will move to Wednesdays starting on March 6. It will air after the Joel McHale comedy Animal Control, marking the first time the show has aired on a weeknight since the 2001-2002 season. Back then, the show led the network’s Thursday lineup.

Which Show Is Taking Over Family Guy’s Timeslot on Fox?

The new animated comedy show Grimsburg will take over Family Guy‘s previous timeslot, beginning in January. Emmy-winning actor Jon Hamm leads the voice cast and serves the role of executive producer. The story centers around Hamm’s private eye character, Marvin Flute, who returns to the titular hometown of Grimsburg. It’s a place where everyone has secrets. Marvin also wants to redeem himself in the eyes of fellow detectives, his ex-wife, and his son.

Grimsburg, which is created by Catlan McClelland and Matthew Schlissel and Chad Gindin serving as showrunner, will get a special preview on January 7 after the NFL game. It will then officially move to Sundays, starting February 18.

Grimsburg is already renewed for season 2, which is not uncommon for animated shows. That’s because animation tends to be on a different production schedule than scripted series. It nonetheless points to why Fox would put the crime comedy in a strong position to succeed by filling in Family Guy‘s timeslot. It will follow The Great North, another relatively recent show only entering season 4 compared to the long-running Family Guy.

The idea may well be that the Griffins are established enough that the audience, built up for decades, will follow the show wherever it goes. It may even boost Animal Control in the process. With this change, Fox is giving newer shows a chance at building off that decades-long relationship, whether by attaching to the Sunday animation block or coming on after a long-established hit like Family Guy.
