Well over $65,000 has been raised on a GoFundMe page for the late community organizer Ryan Carson’s loved ones, just days after his passing.
Friends of Ryan Carson have summoned members of the general public in their masses towards a GoFundMe page set up in the memory 32-year-old activist who passed away in the early hours of Monday morning. Carson is believed to be the victim of a fatal stabbing in Brooklyn, New York.
Ryan Carson’s loved ones launch Gofundme
A GoFundMe was launched in memory of Carson in the wake of his passing on Tuesday, October 3, with the goal of “easing the burden and stress of this horrifying situation so that we (Carson’s loved ones) can have space and time to grieve, and remember Ryan”.
The appeal was soon met with overwhelming support, as no less than 1200 donors came together online to raise over $67,000 within the first two days of the fundraiser going live.
Carson’s passing has prompted an outpouring of grief and anger online and in the press, with the Mayor of New York Eric Adams describing the news as “unthinkable”.
Writer John Green also appealed for his Twitter followers to join him in donating to the GoFundMe page, as he described how he was “heartbroken” by the news.
Carson was dedicated to ‘community care’
Clearly written from a place of deep personal pain in the immediate aftermath of his passing, the accompanying statement on Carson’s GoFundMe briefly outlined the kind of person he was and the importance of his work.
Penned by ‘a collective of Ryan’s close friends’, the statement began: “If you Google ‘Ryan Carson’, you’ll hear (and now see) about the tragedy that struck on early Monday morning.”
“But if you look past the breaking news, you’ll see news on his legislative victories, you’ll probably find his social media accounts filled with thoughts and memories, and you’ll find collections of his artistic works to date.”
The statement went on to say: “We hope you may find his thoughts on mutual aid, his works of advocacy, and understand that his radical principles of community care, justice, and dismantling an individualized profit-centered way of life are worth carrying forward in our own communities.”
This sentiment was echoed on Facebook, with another person close to Carson describing him as “someone who always raised the energy level at events.”
Suspect charged in stabbing case
Given the close proximity to his passing, the case concerning Carson’s passing is still developing at the time of writing.
The latest update as of October 5, however, states that an 18-year-old man has been arrested on murder charges for the fatal stabbing.
The teenager, who remains unnamed, was held and detained by the NYPD, before his eventual arrest on Thursday 5.
