‘He has won me over’: Peter Schmeichel & Jamie Carragher argue over level of Arsenal star

Peter Schmeichel and Jamie Carragher argued over the quality of Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, in comparison to David Raya.

The Liverpool legend made a bold claim that Arsenal ‘won’t win the Premier League’ with Aaron Ramsdale in between the sticks, and that the on-loan Brentford star is ‘100%’ the better player.

But that’s where legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel disagreed because he admitted that Aaron Ramsdale has ‘won me over’ after he previously questioned why Mikel Arteta signed the player from Sheffield United in the first place, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (20/09/23 at 7:35 pm).

On Wednesday night, as Arsenal thrashed PSV 4-0 in the Champions League, Mikel Arteta decided to pick David Raya in between the sticks for the second game running – Thierry Henry shared his own thoughts.

That’s probably yet another sign that Aaron Ramsdale is now starting to lose his number-one spot.

It’s a call that isn’t sitting well with perhaps the greatest keeper of the Premier League era, as he argued with Carragher about the situation

Raya-Ramsdale debate

“Do you think Raya is a better goalkeeper than Ramsdale? Because I don’t,” asked Schmeichel. To which Carragher responded: “100%. Arsenal will never win the league with Ramsdale in goal. No chance.”

Schmeichel then responded: “That is a big statement, Jamie.”

JC: “Ramsdale is playing well for Arsenal. He can’t even get into the England team.”

PS: “That’s a completely different debate and I don’t understand that. But I think he has done tremendously well. I didn’t see this happening when he signed from Sheffield United. I honestly didn’t understand why Arsenal was spending that much money on Ramsdale because I didn’t see it. What he has done is he has won me over. A very consistent and stable keeper. Makes very few mistakes. What has surprised me is how he plays with his feet. His distribution. Taking part in play. I don’t get why Arteta wants to create this problem (of having two number-one keepers).”

JC: “Raya is much better with his feet than Ramsdale.”

PS: “They shouldn’t have signed anybody. That’s the point.”

JC: “They should have. Absolute nonsense.”

Will Ramsdale respond?

Whether it’s on Sunday against Tottenham, in the League Cup against Brentford or in the next Champions League game.

Ramsdale will get his shot at glory again, and that’s where he needs to answer his critics or those who question him.

And, in truth, one of those has to be his manager. There is clearly something in Ramsdale’s game that Arteta doesn’t like, so this is the time for the England international to raise the bar.
