‘Hell of awareness’: Thierry Henry blown away by Arsenal duo in Champions League tonight

Thierry Henry was blown away by Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard who helped Arsenal rip apart PSV in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

After a six-year absence, Arsenal made a return to the Champions League, with none other than Bukayo Saka being the one to score the opening goal.

The 22-year-old pounced on a goalkeeping error after a shot from Martin Odegaard, with Thierry Henry stating ‘he is scoring goals like a striker now’, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (20/09/23 at 8:55 pm).

Bukayo Saka then turned provider for Leandro Trossard to get his own first Champions League goal, with Thierry Henry amazed by the ‘awareness’ the Hale-End star showcased to help find his teammate on the edge of the box.

Arsenal fans were in party mode by this time because, after 20 minutes, they were dominating and all over their Dutch opponents.

But the Premier League title-chasing side didn’t stop there, with Gabriel Jesus and captain Martin Odegaard joining the party to seal a stunning opening night in the Champions League for the Gunners.

Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard star in the Champions League

“We talked about Bukayo Saka at the beginning,” said Henry. “We can see Odegaard having a strike. I think the goalkeeper should have pushed that into the corner.

“But Bukayo Saka is there, the man, scoring even goals like a striker now. Just following the shot.

“Then here, they linked up ever so well, Bukayo Saka puts him, awareness, he waits for Leandro Trossard, make no mistake, that’s a hell of an awareness pass at the edge of the box. But what a finish from Leandro Trossard.

“Then here, I love how you don’t have to pass people just to serve your teammates. What a cross with his left foot, Leandro Trossard. He (Gabriel Jesus) controlled it and smashed it into the net.”

Bukayo Saka going to the top

The England star is going right to the top because, on the Premier League stage, he has proven for years that he is one of the best.

Now it’s a case of taking that onto the Champions League stage, where the best of the best play.

Saka is off and running already, but if he can get consistent performances going here, then he can start calling himself world-class.
