The live-action Monster Hunter movie becomes a hit on Netflix three years after its release. Based on the video game series by Capcom, the Monster Hunter movie was written and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and stars Milla Jovovich, marking the fifth collaboration between the two after Resident Evil. The film follows Captain Artemis and her loyal soldiers as they are transported to a new world full of big monsters they must battle against.

Now, three years after its release, the Monster Hunter movie has become a big hit on Netflix. For the week of November 13-19, Monster Hunter was watched for 10.5 million hours and received 6.1 million total views, ranking third and marking its first week in the Global Top 10.

How Did The Monster Hunter Movie Perform?

As is the case with many video game adaptations, the Monster Hunter movie was a critical and commercial failure. The film was disregarded by critics as a series of special effects loosely bound together by substandard plot and dialogue. However, its action sequences did receive some praise. On Rotten Tomatoes, where it has a 44% percent score, the critical consensus calls Monster Hunter a “mostly mindless blur of action, held together by the slenderest threads of dialogue and plot.” However, as indicated by its 70% audience score, this is “exactly what many viewers will be looking for.”

Even though Anderson found commercial success with prior video game adaptations, Mortal Kombat (1995) and Resident Evil, the live-action Monster Hunter was a box office disappointment. It grossed only $44 million worldwide and failed to make back its production budget of $60 million. However, since it was released in theaters in December 2020, the movie was severely hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic and was even excluded from playing in certain countries like Germany, China, and Japan. Three years later, Monster Hunter is a global hit on Netflix, and it’s finally found an audience that appreciates it for what it’s worth.
