The new Netflix comedy Family Switch makes it to the Netflix global top 10, boasting an impressive number of reviews. Family Switch is a Freaky Friday-esque tale that tells the story of the Walker family’s botched interaction with an astrological reader, that caused them to switch bodies. Directed by McG, Family Switch stars Jennifer Garner, Ed Helms, Emma Myers, and Brady Noon as the central family.
After debuting on the streaming platform on November 30, Family Switch makes it into the Netflix Global Top 10. Family Switch made its way to no. 2 on the Netflix Global top 10 for the week of November 27 – December 3, with 22.2 million views. Topping the list this week was the new animated film Leo, which had 23.6 million views.
Despite Its Netflix Success, Family Switch Is Getting Negative Reviews
Family Switch’s rise to no. 2 on the Netflix charts is particularly impressive given that it was released on the fourth day of this top 10 cycle. This meant that, including on its November 30 debut, Family Switch only had four days to gain the 22.2 million global views that it did. Within these days, it managed to top earlier-released Netflix hits, including Best. Christmas. Ever! and The Killer.

Despite its positive Netflix reign, Family Switch is finding far less critical success in the realm of reviews. Family Switch currently holds a 45% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes, with an audience score of only 49%. This score is likely due in part to Family Switch’s shallow treatment of an already-overdone body switch concept. This plot device has been oft-used, for example in Freaky Friday, Garner’s own 13 Going On 30, and the 2020 horror spoof Freaky.
How Family Switch Cleverly Honors Jennifer Garner’s Beloved 19-Year-Old Comedy
Family Switch isn’t Jennifer Garner’s first time doing a body-switch movie, and the self-aware Netflix film proved it knows this.
That said, Family Switch’s mass popularity proves that a trite concept does not make for an unsuccessful film. While audiences may not be watching Family Switch for its quality, there is a familiarity with the film’s storyline that makes its plot highly accessible. As Family Switch continues into its first full week on Netflix in the week of December 4 – December 10, it will be interesting to see how much the film continues its current success or how much said success might peter off.
