‘Really good signing’: Defoe says another Tottenham star can ‘take the ball’ like James Maddison

Jermain Defoe has praised Yves Bissouma for his transformation at Tottenham Hotspur, after his struggles under Antonio Conte last season.

The former striker noted Yves Bissouma’s performance for Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham in the north London derby on Sunday and how he can ‘take the ball’ like his thriving teammate, James Maddison.

Last season, Defoe admitted that things were ‘difficult’ for the Mali star, but now he looks ‘fit’ and ‘confident’, as he is proving to be a ‘really good signing’, as he told Premier League Productions (25/09/23 at 5:15 pm).

Many knew that the talent was there, it was just a case of getting it out of the all-action midfielder.

Antonio Conte played a two-man midfield. The players were rigid. Very little freedom. All of which didn’t help the cause of their new signing.

Then you add a lack of minutes and injuries on top of that. All of this is going to make you struggle, but it’s not the case now.

“With Bissouma, when he came to the football club everyone was excited,” said Defoe. “It was just a difficult season for him last season. It didn’t happen, for whatever reason.

“But this season, he has shown his quality. He looks fit and confident. And, just like Maddison, he can take the ball in areas that he is comfortable in and he looks like a really good signing.”

One of the first names on Tottenham’s teamsheet

On many occasions last season, Bissouma couldn’t even get into Tottenham’s XI.

Yet, fast forward to the present, and he is now one of the first names on the team sheet, which is a compliment to the player and his manager.

The partnerships that are being built by this new-look Spurs team is exciting the fans and it will only get better once they spend more time with each other and Rodrigo Bentancur re-enters the picture.
