‘The quickest’: Tottenham told Micky van de Ven has had the same impact as Newcastle United star

Tony Cascarino has compared Tottenham Hotspur’s summer signing Micky van de Ven to Newcastle United star, Sven Botman.

The former Republic of Ireland striker says Micky van de Ven has been ‘a real big surprise’ this season.

After a morale-sapping season last time out, as well as abject defensive performances, Tottenham turned to Wolfsburg’s rising star to push them forward again.

During the early stages of the season, as Ange Postecoglou’s side sit top of the Premier League, Cascarino says Micky van de Ven has had a ‘real immediate effect’, just like Sven Botman did at Newcastle United last season, as he told talkSPORT.

It’s not just the quality on the ball from the 22-year-old, but the speed and ability to match any opposition player stride for stride.

Cascarino touched upon how the Dutch international was known as the ‘quickest defender’ in Germany football prior to his transfer to the English Premier League.

Micky van de Ven’s impact

“Van de Ven has been a real big surprise,” said Cascarino. “I say surprise because you have to give credit to the football club for the recruitment.

“Most people know, he was known as the quickest defender in German football with Wolfsburg. With that, he is a talented boy on the ball. Looks incredibly assured.

“He reminds me of what Botman did at Newcastle. When Newcastle bought Sven Botman. He looked like a real immediate effect on the team.”

Goodbye Eric Dier

There are levels to his game and van de Ven and Cristian Romero have just shown that.

In previous years, the likes of Davinson Sanchez, Eric Dier and Japhet Tanganga have struggled.

But the club’s new pairing, especially van de Ven have now shown the likes of Dier levels and perhaps the cue that they should leave the club in January.

Dier is yet to play a single minute under Postecoglou this season and if he doesn’t get the hint yet that he needs to leave, then he never will.
