’Too many times’: Glenn Hoddle says two Tottenham players pass it ‘square’ & ‘backwards’

Glenn Hoddle has spoken about how the rejuvenated Yves Bissouma is an upgrade on Tottenham Hotspur duo Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

The benched Tottenham duo are playing a back-up role to Yves Bissouma, who according to Hoddle, is now ‘playing like he did at Brighton’.

One area of the midfielder’s game that has impressed is playing the ball ‘forward’ and feeding the likes of James Maddison in the final third.

In comparison, Hoddle thinks that Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, as proven during the previous campaign, pass the ball ‘square’ and ‘backwards’ on too many occasions, as he told Premier League Productions (09/10/23 at 5:30 pm).

That’s probably a reason why they have been benched because they don’t have the athleticism the likes of Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr and James Maddison showcase.

Either way, it has been a very impressive start to the season by Yves Bissouma as he was given his flowers by a club legend.

Bissouma, Hojbjerg and Skipp

“Bissouma plays and looks forward,” said Hoddle. “He is a good player, this boy. He is playing like he did at Brighton.

“He didn’t get on with Conte or whatever. He didn’t get the best out of him. But he can play forward.

“Whereas I felt that Skipp and Hojbjerg last year looked square and backwards too many times. If you have got a ten in there (Maddison), then you have to feed him.”

Tottenham without Bissouma

Well, whilst Spurs sit top of the table after beating Luton Town over the weekend, it came at a cost.

Bissouma, down to his own stupidity, managed to get himself sent off by picking up a second yellow card for diving and he will now be suspended for Spurs’ home clash against Fulham after the international break.

In truth, it’s a game that Ange Postecoglou’s side should win without their midfielder, with the possibility that Hojbjerg or Skipp come into the XI.
