Virgil van Dijk claims Liverpool summer signing is a ‘different breed’

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has praised Dominik Szoboszlai for his performance against Everton on Saturday.

Dominik Szoboszlai is a ‘different breed’ having impressed with his energy in the heart of the Liverpool midfield.

That is according to Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, who has heaped praise on Szoboszlai.

Liverpool had to battle for their three points against Everton on Saturday with the Toffees proving a tough nut to crack.

Mohamed Salah ended up finding the net twice in the second half though, handing Liverpool a 2-0 win and derby day bragging rights.

Dominik Szoboszlai praised by Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool continue their strong start to the new Premier League season, with Jurgen Klopp’s new-look midfield ticking along nicely.

Alexis Mac Allister may not be in his perfect role but he is faring well, with fellow summer addition Szoboszlai stealing the show.

The Hungarian joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig over the summer thanks to a £60million release clause in his contract.

Szoboszlai has already become a fan favourite at Anfield and Virgil van Dijk has joined in with the adulation.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Van Dijk suggested that Szoboszlai is simply a ‘different breed’ of midfielder.

Van Dijk noted that Szoboszlai just doesn’t stop running but also wants to get on the ball at all times, with his attitude on and off the ball impressing the Dutchman.

“Szoboszlai is a different breed,” said Van Dijk. “His energy, he keeps running, he wants the ball at all times, he counter-presses – that’s what we want,” he added.

My view: Even more to come from Szoboszlai

Szoboszlai has only bagged one Premier League goal and hasn’t registered an assist yet, so the huge praise may seem surprising.

The 22-year-old has been a creative force though with only six players registering more key passes in the Premier League this season.

Those key passes will turn into assists at some point with Szoboszlai creating chances both from open play and from set pieces.

If Szoboszlai can add the goals and assists to his approach play and his incredible work off the ball, then Liverpool will have a real superstar.

Add in that Szoboszlai still has plenty of potential and it may not be long until that £60million fee is seen as a real bargain.
