Guillermo del Toro is one of the best filmmakers of the 21st century. He has directed notable films such as Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy, The Shape of Water, Pacific Rim, and Pinocchio. Given his impressive body of work, who better than del Toro to adapt Mary Shelley’s iconic Gothic horror novel, Frankenstein?

The film features an incredible ensemble cast, including Oscar Isaac as Dr. Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi, whose popularity continues to rise at an extraordinary rate, as Frankenstein’s monster.  Christoph Waltz, Mia Goth, Charles Dance, David Bradley, Lars Mikkelsen, Ralph Ineson, and Felix Kammerer also star.

Dr. Frankenstein, a genius but egotistical scientist, attempts to push the boundaries of science and, using an amalgamation of body parts, brings his monstrous experiment to life, setting off a tragic chain of events that will end in ruin for the mad genius and his monstrous creation.

A Merry Little Ex-Mas

Netflix has a hearty heaped plateful of Christmas films for subscribers to dine on this holiday season, and one in particular we’re excited to stream is A Merry Little Ex-Mas.

Alicia Silverstone, beloved for her role in the classic romantic teen comedy Clueless, stars as the lead and is joined by the likes of Oliver Hudson (Rules of Engagement), Jameela Jamil (The Good Place), Pierson Fode (The Wrong Paris), and Sabrina the Teenage Witch herself, Melissa Joan Hart.

A separated couple, close to finalising their divorce, decide to spend one last Christmas together with their kids. But when the Husband brings his brand-new girlfriend to the occasion, jealousy, tension, and chaos enter the home for the holidays.

Nouvella Vague

A love letter to the French New Wave of the 1960s, Nouvelle Vague is for cinephiles. Richard Linklater directs, and stars the likes of Zoey Deutch and Guuilaume Marbeck, who portray some of the biggest stars of French cinema from the era.

While we aren’t expecting the film to break records anytime soon, it’s certainly worth adding to the watchlist for any cinephile among the Netflix subscribers.

Swiss critic Jean-Luc Godard leaves his job at a prominent French magazine and decides to become a filmmaker himself. With the help of Georges de Beauregard, he funds a low-budget feature about a gangster couple and cements his place as one of the pioneers of the French New Wave.

Train Dreams

Directed by Clint Bentley, Train Dreams is adapted from Denis Johnson’s beloved novella of the same name. The film stars Joel Edgerton as Robert Grainier, with Felicity Jones as his wife, Gladys Grainier. The film, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, has received rave reviews from critics, particularly for Edgerton’s performance, dubbed one of the best of his career, and Bentley’s direction.

Robert Grainier, a logger in 2oth century America, works hard developing the railroad across the ever-expanding United States of America, forcing him to spend months at a time away from his wife and young daughter. Grainier struggles to find his place in a world fueled by constant change.

November 1

Doctor Sleep

In between making The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor for Netflix, Mike Flanagan was hard at work adapting Stephen King’s sequel to The Shining with Doctor Sleep.

Flanagan continues to prove he is one of the best filmmakers of his era by expertly and delicately balancing the horror and drama of King’s novel. Naturally, many familiar faces of Flanagan’s previous works were seen in the film, but two major standouts were Ewan McGregor picking up where Danny Lloyd left off as Danny Torence, and Rebecca Ferguson as the villainous Rose the Hat.

Years after his father went mad at the Overlook Hotel, Danny Torence, now an alcoholic, struggles to hold down a job. He reluctantly uses his powers to help those find peace at a hospice and soon connects with a teenager with even stronger powers than his own, which catches the eye of The True Knot, an immortal cult that hunts down children with the “shine” to fuel their immortality.

Elvis

Austin Butler was a man possessed in his attempt to give the best performance he could as Elvis. So much so that months after production wrapped, Butler struggled to drop the cadence of Presley’s voice. The performance earned Butler a deserved Oscar nomination for Best Actor at the 95th Academy Awards.

There are few directors who could capture the larger-than-life story of Elvis, but Baz Luhrmann does what he does best, bringing to life some of the most iconic and controversial moments of Elvis’s life from his humble beginnings to his death in 159 minutes.

The life and career of Elvis Presley, once the biggest rock star in the world, and his complicated relationship with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker.

November 1

Tenet

Christopher Nolan is one of the most accomplished filmmakers of his generation, and only a mind like his could comprehend the premise of Tenet.

A film that may require multiple rewatches to fully understand the constant twists and turns, it’s certainly one of the most unique action films of the 21st Century. It stars John David Washinton as the “Protagonist,” who gives an excellent performance, and is joined by Robert Pattinson, who has been on a one-man mission since Twilight to prove his versatility and talent as an actor.

In the world of espionage, the operative known as The Protagonist is recruited by a shadowy organisation called Tenet. His mission is to prevent the Russian oligarch, Andrei Sator, from starting World War 3. But in order to do so, the Protagonist must master the art of time inversion.

November 2

King Richard

In the world of sports, there are countless success stories of those hailing from humble beginnings, where dedication and hard work have led to dominance in their respective sports and earned worldwide recognition. That much is certainly true for the Tennis duo Serena and Venus Williams, who dominated Women’s Tennis from the late 1990s to the 2010s.

But the story behind their success starts with their childhood, where they were coached by their parents, Oracene Price and Richard Williams. Will Smith portrayed Richard, who would go on to win the Academy Award for Best Actor, after previously missing out in 2001 and 2006 for his roles in Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness.

With vision and a plan to turn his daughters, Venus and Serena Williams, into stars, Richard Williams was determined to make them a force to be reckoned with in the world of Tennis.

November 13

Moulin Rouge

The second Baz Luhrmann film on this list, Moulin Rouge, is arguably the very best of the bunch from the director. Blending modern music into the backdrop of the Bohemian Revolution of Paris in the late 1890s is an inspired choice. The cast is electric, particularly outstanding performances from Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman.

Christian, a poor English poet, heads to Paris to experience the Bohemian Revolution. Befriending a colourful bunch of like-minded performers, their attempts to get their play funded lead Christian to fall in love with the beautiful courtesan Satine, who is pursued by a rich and jealous duke.

November 13

Blue Beetle

While the future of Blue Beetle remains in doubt, it’s still one of the most underrated films on DC’s slate. Even as a standalone film, it’s an incredibly fun superhero movie with tons of heart, bolstered by a great performance from Cobra Kai’s Xolo Maridueña.

Jaime Reyes finds himself in possession of a strange, ancient relic: biotechnology called the Scarab. Chosen by the relic to be its host, Jamie is imbued with armor and incredible superpowers.
