Calvin’s fate in Lessons in Chemistry is a bus-sized departure from the book
Episode 2 of Lessons in Chemistry ends on a shocking cliffhanger but what happens to Calvin and does he die?
*WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Lessons in Chemistry* — Starring Brie Larson as Elizabeth Zott, Lessons in Chemistry is the newest series to arrive on Apple TV+ and following the release of the show’s first two chapters, fans have been left eagerly awaiting the next installment after episode 2 ended on a jaw-dropping cliffhanger which left the fate of Elizabeth’s love interest Calvin up in the air.
Episode 2 cliffhanger recap
Titled Her and Him, episode 2 of Lessons in Chemistry came to a shocking conclusion as Calvin Evans, a colleague and love interest of Elizabeth’s, gets hit by a bus.
The opening two chapters of the series delve deeply into Elizabeth and Calvin’s relationship after the pair cross paths at the Hastings Research Institute where he works as a successful chemist and she is a lowly lab technician, despite being equally as talented and knowledgeable as him, if not more so.
Lessons in Chemistry’s second episode ends with Calvin going for a run with his and Elizabeth’s dog, Six Thirty – who gets his name as he wakes Elizabeth up like clockwork at the exact same time every morning.
However, during the run, Six Thirty suddenly stops as he’s struggling with the leash Elizabeth got him for Christmas. As Calvin attempts to get the dog moving again, he ends up stepping into the street and the path of an oncoming bus.
Does Calvin die in Lessons in Chemistry?
Yes, Calvin does tragically die in Lessons in Chemistry.
While his fate isn’t confirmed by the end of episode 2’s cliffhanger, the character’s death is confirmed in the novel upon which the series is based.
However, while Calvin does die in the award-winning debut book by author Bonnie Garmus, the manner of his demise is slightly different.
Rather than being hit by a bus, Calvin gets run over by a police car while walking Six Thirty, with his death being caused by hitting his head on the pavement.
While Calvin’s death is a tragic moment for Elizabeth, it proves to be a huge turning point in her life as it’s not long after before she is asked to host a new television cooking program called Supper at Six which turns her into a household name.
Lessons in Chemistry’s release schedule
Agonizingly, fans hoping to delve into episode 3 of Lessons in Chemistry will have to stay patient as the show is reverting to a weekly release schedule following its two-episode premiere on October 13.
Episode 3 will arrive on Apple TV+ on Friday, October 20 and the show will continue to air each week until the eighth and final episode drops on November 24.
