Club rule out £50m January deal as agent confirms Liverpool are ‘interested’

Bayer Leverkusen have ruled out selling Piero Hincapie in the January transfer window after the defender’s agent confirmed interest from Premier League giants Liverpool.

Rumours of Virgil van Dijk’s demise may have been a little exaggerated. He remains one of the finest centre-halves in world football when at the peak of his considerable powers. But reports linking Liverpool with a number of left-footed stoppers certainly gives the impression of a succession plan being put in place.

Liverpool allegedly looked at Chelsea’s Levi Colwill and Rennes’ Arthur Theate over the summer.

The agent of Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie, meanwhile, claims that ‘Liverpool were interested’ in the £50 million-rated Ecuador international too before the window closed, only for Jurgen Klopp’s side to decide that midfield reinforcements was the more prescient concern.

“Liverpool were interested in him,” Manuel Sierra tells Futbol Sin Casette. “But, at that time, they chose to invest in the midfield.

“For January, they are talking, like other clubs. (To sign Hincapie, you will have to pay) no less than £50 million.”

Even bids in that region may not be enough to tempt Levrekusen into a sale, however. After years of near misses and heartbreak – Bayer are known as ‘Neverkusen’ for a reason – a long-awaited first ever Bundesliga title feels a very realistic prospect this term. Xabi Alonso’s outstanding side are top, with six wins and a draw from seven games.

And, according to 90Min, the prospect of a historic title win has Leverkusen warning potential suitors that Hincapie – nor Florian Wirtz, Edmond Taposba, Jeremie Frimpong or Victor Boniface – will be going anywhere in the winter.

Hincapie has yet to start a league game in 2023/24, returning to contention late after a suspension picked up at the end of last term. He has come off the bench in three of the last four, however, and remains a highly-important cog in Alonso’s machine.
