After Dexter Reed (Kenan Thompson) returns home to get a job at Good Burger, which is now owned by Ed (Kel Mitchell), a shady lawyer for MegaCorp, Cecil McNevin (Lil Rel Howery), starts trying to buy it and make it a franchise. Dex convinces Ed to take the deal, but Cecil reveals Mega Corp is actually owned by Katt Bozwell (Jillian Bell), the sister of Kurt Bozwell, the former owner of Mondo Berger, who tried to steal Ed’s special sauce. She shuts down Good Burger, but thanks to Ed’s elite coding skills, her robots are reprogrammed and run Megacorp’s launch of Mega Good Burger and they give Good Burger back to Ed.
What Happened Between Good Burger 1 and Good Burger 2?
Ed stayed exactly the same.
In the years since the original Good Burger, Dex moved away to try to become an entrepreneur. He’s been at it for a few years, but failed to hit it big so far, but hasn’t had any big hits so far. Many of his projects have been massive failures, such as Burn No More, as seen at the beginning of the movie. After Burn No More’s demonstration goes up in smoke, Dex loses his office and returns to get a job from Ed at Good Burger.
When it comes to Ed and Good Burger, a lot of things have changed, but it looks exactly the same. The previous owner moved on from the company, but since Ed’s Sauce saved the store, he handed the business over to Ed. Despite being the owner, Ed still works the same role as he did when he was 15. Ed is the only remaining member of the old crew, if you don’t count Fizz (Josh Server), who’s been frozen alive in the freezer for a few years.
Why Mia Has a Grudge Against Dex
How did he lose his sister’s money?
One of the new Good Burger employees is Mia (Kamaia Fairburn), Dex’s nice. When Dex first arrives at Good Burger, she refuses to even talk to him, but when she does talk to him, she’s not friendly and won’t let him forget he made her mom lose all her money. Mia says the reason she had to get a job at Good Burger was to help out her mom. It’s not revealed what project Dext lost the money on, but considering his projects in the movie include Burn No More and permanent ice, it was likely an equally bizarre idea. Dex convinced her to fund the project, and then never paid her back.
Mia warms up to Dex a little bit after he gets a picture with her and Luna Fox during a live on-stage Good Burger delivery, but after he convinces Ed to sell Good Burger and everyone loses their jobs, she turns on him again because it’s the same kind of behavior that lost her mom’s money. After Dex puts himself in danger to save Mia from the fry press, he proves he’s willing to actually put his family before himself, so Mia and her mom, Charlotte (Leslie Jones) both forgive him. Charlotte comes to Good Burger and tells Dex “we’re family, that’s more important than money.”
Why Did MegaCorp Want to Shut Down the Original Good Burger?
Mega Good Berger loves everything about Good Burger, except the people.
With Good Burger’s massive sustained success over the years and the propriety knowledge of Ed’s Sauce, it makes total sense that a massive investor would desire to replicate their success and expand Good Burger to a massive chain, but why did MegaCorp and Katt Bozwell also shut down the original restaurant? It’s important to remember that Kurt Bozwell, the villain of the original Good Burger, was an ambitious restaurant owner. The only reason he wanted to destroy Good Burger was because of the competition it posed to Mondo Burger, and Katt Bozwell’s motivation isn’t entirely different.
There’s obviously more than just spiteful revenge in her plan because Mega Good Burger is, in many ways, a celebration of all the things that make the original Good Burger iconic. It keeps “Good Burger” in the name, every single store will have its own robotic version of Ed, and the burger maker replicates the Good Burger and Ed’s Sauce. Like her brother Kurt, Katt wants to own a mega-successful burger company, but instead of trying to squash Good Burger like Kurt, she bought it. Of course, despite embracing almost everything about Good Burger, she did want revenge, and exacted it upon Ed and the other Good Burger employees.
How Smart is Ed, Actually?
He does something really smart in both movies.
Ed is presented as extremely unintelligent with a questionable grip on reality, but at the end of Good Burger 2 he reprograms MegaCorp’s computers to make the Ed-imatronics and burger machines attack everyone in their stores in a matter of minutes. Not only did he demonstrate an amazing skill with computers, but also the business and public relations savvy to recognize a product failure wouldn’t be as damaging to MegaCorp as rogue killer robots would. Obviously, with the tone of Good Burger 2, it’s totally reasonable for Ed to show outsized intelligence and massive skill sets without necessarily meaning he’s actually smart, but there could be more to it.
It’s important to remember Ed did something similar to Kurt and Mondo Burger, showing an advanced understanding of the justice system in that case. Assuming it’s not simply a gag, and is actually indicative of Ed’s intelligence and abilities, that prevents two possibilities. First, Ed has a brilliant mind and created a “dumb” persona to hide behind, or second, Ed is some kind of savant. Ed’s behavior in the first Good Burger spawned speculation that Ed is autistic, and while Ed expresses attributes that are sometimes autism tropes, such as being a savant, the theory has never been confirmed by anyone involved with the movie.
