‘I don’t’: Hoddle says Chelsea player did something v Villa he hasn’t seen him do in 3 years

Glenn Hoddle says he hasn’t seen Thiago Silva make a mistake for Chelsea during his three years at the club, up until their 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday.

The former Chelsea player praised Aston Villa for punishing Thiago Silva’s mistake and the ‘good finish’ from Ollie Watkins in the second half.

That’s another defeat for Mauricio Pochettino and this helpless Chelsea side, who after spending hundreds and hundreds of millions in the transfer market, don’t seem to be moving forward.

It was put forward by England legend Glenn Hoddle that it ‘just isn’t happening’ for the London club, as he told Premier League Productions (24/09/23 at 4:20 pm).

Aston Villa, on the other hand, despite losing in Europe in midweek, turned up at Stamford Bridge and put on a very good showing.

Either way, it was a deserved three points for the Midlands side, who also took the advantage of punishing Chelsea after they were down to ten men just before the hour mark when Malo Gusto’s yellow was overturned following a reckless challenge on Lucas Digne.

Thiago Silva mistake

“Things for Chelsea just aren’t happening,” said Hoddle. “When Thiago Silva makes mistakes like that, which I don’t think he had made in three years of being there, and they end up getting punished.

“I like Watkins here, he drills it into the bottom corner. I think the keeper might have looked at that and thought ‘Hmm, shouldn’t get beaten by that angle’. But it was a good finish.”

Chelsea fail to pounce on Villa’s midweek trip

On Thursday night, Unai Emery’s Aston Villa were leaving Poland deflated and disappointed after suffering a deserved 3-2 defeat in their opening game of the Europa Conference League.

They had little time to prepare for Sunday’s match, as well as key players still being out injured.

But they didn’t show it at Stamford Bridge, as Chelsea remain in the Premier League’s bottom half, whilst Villa move into the top-six with those three points.
