Jurgen Klopp admits ‘outstanding’ Liverpool player has just sustained an injury

Jurgen Klopp has now opened up on the latest ‘annoying’ injury that Thiago Alcantara has suffered following another setback in the Liverpool star’s path to return to fitness.

The 32-year-old has not played for the Reds since April after undergoing surgery at the end of last season. Liverpool sent the Spaniard for an operation in the hopes it would fix Thiago’s long-standing hip injury. But further problems have since arisen in his recovery at Melwood.

Thiago had initially returned to training in August in a huge boost for boss Klopp. But Thiago soon returned to the treatment room within weeks just as his return to fitness neared. Now, the 46-cap international is facing another protected absence after developing another issue.

Liverpool boss Klopp admits Thiago’s latest injury is ‘annoying’

Klopp has confirmed that Thiago is no nearer to making his long-awaited return to action as Liverpool manage another injury. It is not a major problem but it is severe enough to delay a return. His new issue is also unrelated to the two injuries that have plagued him for months.

“It’s just, for him especially, it’s annoying,” Klopp admitted, via quotes by the Liverpool Echo. “He’s now had two setbacks in the rehab. Not massive but enough to take him off the pitch again. Obviously, [it is] not the same injury, not at all, but a bit similar.”

Thiago missed Liverpool’s final six games of the 2022/23 Premier League term following the Spaniard’s hip injury requiring surgery. It saw his campaign end in April after just 18 outings, of which he started in 14. Klopp would only give Thiago just 1,256 minutes of league action.

Given the number of injury issues Thiago suffered last season, Liverpool and Klopp will have hoped for better this term. He endured four spells on their sidelines throughout the Premier League campaign. Three of those periods out for an injury also proved long-term for Thiago.

Not once since Klopp signed Thiago from Bayern Munich for an initial £20m, rising to £25m in September 2020 has the Spaniard stayed fit for a full season, either. The midfielder, whom Klopp has called ‘outstanding’, has always endured at least one lengthy spell out of action.
