Legend thinks Liverpool are targeting an ‘exceptional’ Salah replacement

Former Liverpool icon Michael Owen has given Jamal Musiala his seal of approval as the Premier League giants reportedly eye up the ‘exceptional’ Bayern Munich ace.

Arguably the best young midfielder anywhere in world football not named ‘Jude’, Bayern Munich’s baby-faced talisman certainly lived up to Owen’s billing as the Bundesliga champions survived a scare to take control of their Champions League group in Istanbul.

Not content with setting up Harry Kane to put Bayern 2-1 up – bamboozling the Galatasaray backline as he shaped up to shoot before rattling an inch-perfect pass into the striker’s feet – Jamal Musiala then lathered the icing on top of the Bayern cake with a precise finish of his own.

Liverpool, according to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, see Musiala as a player capable of stepping into the shoes of Mo Salah should he depart for Saudi Arabia in 2024, and an Anfield icon of the past cannot speak highly enough of a potential Anfield icon of the future.

Liverpool love Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala

“I think he is exceptional, really exceptional. Its such a shame he chose Germany over England!” Owen tells TNT Sport, Musiala representing the Three Lions at U21 level before opting for the country of his birth.

“I thought he was brilliant in the last major tournament (the 2022 Qatar World Cup). There’s lots of people comparing him to Bellingham but I think he is a different type of player. He’s a brilliant runner with the ball. I think he is unbelievable when it comes to dribbling.

“I mean, he’s got the lot this lad.”

Musiala, once of Chelsea, produced a staggering 32 goal contributions in 47 games for Bayern last term, scoring the decisive strike as the Bavarians snatched the title from under Borussia Dortmund’s nose on the final day.

He has, however, found himself in and out of Thomas Tuchel’s XI of late, with Fabrizio Romano telling Caught Offside that there has been little movement on a contract extension.

‘No agreement with Bayern’

“His contract is due to expire in 2026. And at the moment it’s true that there is no agreement with Bayern over a new deal,” Romano explains.

“Why? Because at the moment the plans to discuss a new contract were with Bayern’s old management – the likes of Oliver Kahn, who recently left the club – they were preparing a new contract proposal for Musiala, and then the management changed.

“Now there are new people in charge at Bayern, so the timing of the contract talks changed, and there are still no talks because of this change at the top of the club. Still, for Bayern it is an absolute priority to keep Musiala, because they know there will be interested clubs.”
