Manager claims Liverpool player is now out of Anfield clash

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher will not be playing against Union Saint-Gilloise this evening having suffered an injury blow.

Jurgen Klopp will not be able to call upon Caoimhin Kelleher when Liverpool face Union Saint-Gilloise this evening.

Liverpool are back in Europa League action tonight as they welcome Union Saint-Gilloise to Anfield.

A partner club of Brighton and Hove Albion, Union Saint-Gilloise have been on an incredible rise in recent years and will be looking for a real upset.

We could see Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister take on his brother Kevin, who plays as a defender for the Belgian side.

It’s unclear whether Mac Allister will start, but one player seemingly ruled out is Liverpool goalkeeper Kelleher…

Caoimhin Kelleher picks up injury ahead of Liverpool clash

Kelleher has carved out a reputation Liverpool’s cup goalkeeper whilst backing up first-choice stopper Alisson.

Kelleher started against LASK in Liverpool’s first Europa League group-stage game and was in line to start against Union Saint-Gilloise too.

However, Kelleher has now picked up an injury and is set to miss the opportunity to play this evening.

Kelleher has been left out of the Republic of Ireland squad with boss Stephen Kenny now commenting on the situation.

Kenny has told The Irish Examiner that Kelleher has had 12 stitches in his leg following an injury sustained in Liverpool training.

Kenny added that Kelleher ‘was going to play’ against Union Saint-Gilloise but now faced a period on the sidelines.

“Caoimhín got 12 stitches in a leg joint,” said Kenny. “Sometimes with stitches if it’s a calf, a thigh or facial injury you can get on with it, but you can’t if it’s on the joint. It reopens all the time.”

“It’s unfortunate for Caoimhín really. He has played in the Europa League and was going to play tonight (against USG), making in three weeks in a row of starts,” he added.

Jurgen Klopp left in tricky situation after Kelleher injury

Kelleher’s late injury problem leaves Liverpool in a pickle ahead of the Union Saint-Gilloise game.

The Reds did not register Adrian San Miguel as part of their Europa League squad.

The Spaniard cannot move up to replace Kelleher tonight and that likely means another start for Alisson.

That’s not an absolute disaster but Jurgen Klopp would have loved to give Alisson a rest and allow Kelleher a chance to feature, benefiting his own development and his potential valuation.

That won’t happen tonight though with Klopp and Liverpool heading into tonight’s game with Kelleher on the treatment table.
