Newcastle United have now met with the agents of Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips ahead of the January transfer window.
Sandro Tonali is awaiting a suspension and Newcastle United are now looking towards Kalvin Phillips as a potential replacement.
That is according to a report from TEAMtalk, who claim that Newcastle are already making moves for Phillips.
The Magpies have been rocked with summer signing Tonali facing a suspension having admitted a gambling addiction.
The Guardian note that Tonali has admitted betting on AC Milan matches during his time at the club and he now faces a long ban as a result.
Newcastle United moving for Kalvin Phillips
TEAMtalk now claim that Newcastle are looking to sign Manchester City misfit Phillips as a replacement for Tonali.
It’s stated that Newcastle have already met with the England international’s agents to discuss a January move.
Dan Ashworth is thought to be pushing for a signing and has now with agency CAA Stellar to set the wheels in motion.
Phillips is allegedly keen on the move and has already been told that he is free to find a new club by Manchester City.
Phillips needs first-team action ahead of Euro 2024 and it’s clear that he just isn’t going to find that at the Etihad Stadium.
The 27-year-old may well make sense as a loan signing to fill in for Tonali, but City may well be keen to cash in having spent £45million on Phillips last year.
Tottenham Hotspur could now miss out on Phillips
Phillips may not be featuring much for City right now but there appears to be plenty of interest in the £150,000-a-week midfielder.
Tottenham Hotspur are allegedly interested with The Telegraph noting that Johan Lange is a ‘big fan’ of Phillips.
Lange is arriving from Aston Villa on November 1st and seems to have his top target in mind with Phillips wanted.
Newcastle now appear to be making their move though, potentially leaving Spurs lagging behind well in advance of the January transfer window.
