Today, a report has revealed that longtime Marvel Studios screenwriter Michael Waldron has stepped away from penning Avengers 5. Waldron has been Kevin Feige’s go-to writer after writing Loki season 1, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Avengers: Secret Wars. After original writer Jeff Loveness was fired, Waldron was brought on to bridge Avengers 5 to Secret Wars. It’s unknown if Marvel was unhappy with his draft of Avengers 5 and if he will bring someone else in to touch it up. He is still attached to Avengers: Secret Wars.

The film was originally titled The Kang Dynasty when announced at SDCC 2022, but after the guilty verdict was given to Jonathan Majors, the studio separated itself from the actor. It’s unknown if Avengers 5 will even use Kang as the main villain since the subtitle has also been officially removed. Director Destin Daniel Cretton also stepped away from directing the film to focus on Shang-Chi 2 and the upcoming Naruto live-action movie. The studio will continue to look for a new screenwriter and director on the massive project. Many fans had hoped Loki’s season 2 head writer, Eric Martin (Rick & Morty), could get the call following his take on Kang in the second season of the Disney+ multiverse series.

Avengers 5 is still slated to hit theaters on May 1st, 2026
