Every upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender movie, TV show, and spinoff holds a lot of promise. Created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the series ran for three seasons on Nickelodeon between 2005 and 2008, spawning spinoff comic book runs and the equally acclaimed sequel series The Legend of Korra. The Avatar: The Last Airbender characters live in a world where some people are able to manipulate (or “bend”) one of the four elements: water, earth, fire, or air. However, each generation has its own Avatar, allowing the franchise to continue in multiple ways.

In the original Avatar series, Aang’s Air Nomad past is rather harrowing: the sole survivor of the Air Nation, he emerges after a 100-year slumber to find a world consumed by war. With the help of his friends, Water Tribe teens Katara and Sokka; the young Earthbender Toph; and his enemy-turned-friend Zuko, Aang manages to topple the Fire Nation’s warlord and leader, Ozai. While The Legend of Korra centers on the titular avatar who picks up Aang’s mantle, there are clearly plenty of stories left to explore in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender — both in animation and live-action formats.

Netflix’s Live-Action Avatar: The Last Airbender TV Series (2024)

Aang from Netflix's live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender TV series

First up is Netflix’s highly anticipated live-action adaptation of the animated television series. Also called Avatar: The Last Airbender, the TV series aims to be leagues better than M. Night Shyamalan’s truly dismal 2010 live-action movie adaptation. Based on teasers and set photos, Netflix is putting a ton of care into its version of ATLA. Plus, the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender boasts an incredible ensemble cast, including Gordon Cormier, Dallas Liu, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, and Daniel Dae Kim. Given the series’ enduring appeal and the recent success of Netflix’s live-action One Piece, the show could be the multi-season blockbuster the streamer needs.

An Untitled Avatar Studios Film About Adult Aang

Perhaps the most exciting upcoming release is the untitled Avatar Studios film that will center on adult Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, and Zuko. In The Legend of Korra, the franchise teased some of the characters’ fates, though it left a lot to the imagination. While the ATLA comic book series follows Aang’s adventures in the immediate aftermath of the Avatar: The Last Airbender series finale, the forthcoming film looks to jump ahead and chronicle a brand-new time period in Aang’s life. Currently, the project is slated for release on October 10, 2025.

An Avatar Studios Show Featuring The Next Earth Avatar

While Avatar Studios plans to show fans Aang and the others all grown up in the first animated Avatar The Last Airbender movie, the first series will take a different path. The Avatar’s cycle of rebirth is a specific trajectory, with a new Avatar being born into one of the four nations in a set pattern. After air comes water, hence Korra’s lineage. Next up in the cycle would be Earth, which means Avatar Studios’ next sequel show will focus on the new Earth Avatar. While the studio hasn’t released much information about the upcoming animated series, it’ll be interesting to see how the latest Earth Avatar compares to its predecessor, Kyoshi.

A Standalone Zuko Movie

Zuko surrounded by flame in The Last Airbender

Since the original series release, Zuko, the banished prince of the Fire Nation, has been a fan-favorite character. Although he initially starts out as Aang’s enemy, believing that capturing the Avatar will restore his honor and win over his abusive, warlord father, he goes on one of the best journeys of self-discovery ever chronicled on television. Zuko’s painful past and redemption arc aside, he’s the perfect supporting character to center a film on in the Avatar universe. Despite not being part of the Avatar cycle, the Firebender plays a significant role in many key events and even returns in Korra.

A Film Centered On Avatar Kyoshi

The final Avatar Studios project that’s been confirmed is a film centered on Avatar Kyoshi. A prequel to Aang’s time, the Kyoshi film is very highly anticipated by many, especially those who have read the two novels centered on the hard-line Avatar. While it’s not clear if the movie will adapt the Avatar Kyoshi books or serve as a continuation of them, Kyoshi’s life offers up plenty of ground to cover as she lived a staggering 230 years. Reportedly, Avatar Studios aims to put out two projects per year for the foreseeable future, which means there will be even more exciting announcements down the line when it comes to the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
